Mission Hill is a small town in southeastern South Dakota, located in Yankton County. It has a population of approximately 200 people and covers an area of 0.18 square miles.
The town was first settled in the late 1800s and was named for a nearby Catholic mission. The mission was established in 1874 by Jesuit priest Father Pierre-Jean De Smet and was meant to serve the Native American population in the area.
Today, Mission Hill is a quiet rural community surrounded by farmland and prairie. It has a post office, a church, and a few small businesses, but most residents travel to nearby cities for shopping and other services.
One notable attraction in Mission Hill is the Sacred Heart Cemetery, which is the final resting place of Father De Smet and many other notable figures in the region's history. The cemetery is maintained by the Mission Hill Historical Society and is open to the public.
